William Henry Hutson purchased the property known as “The Farm” in 1932 while he was the landlord of the Axe & Compass pub in the village. Over the following four years, he built four dwellings to rent out. William Charles (Bill) was born in the pub in 1935, and in 1937 the family moved into one of the bungalows known as “The Boat House.”
There are still photographs displayed in the Axe & Compass showing William Henry Hutson standing proudly outside the pub with his name above the door.
During the Second World War, he established a boat hire business, renting out punts, rowing boats and canoes on the river.
In 1949, he leased the boat hire business to Mr H. Collier, who was then renting one of the bungalows. In 1961, after completing his National Service and following a career as a train driver in Southend, his son William Charles Hutson (Bill) took over the business with his wife Wendy. Together they worked tirelessly to develop the land into the holiday and residential park you see today.
Following the war, there was a huge demand for accommodation from returning service personnel. Park homes provided an affordable and practical solution, and with far fewer regulations than exist today, caravans were placed throughout the site to help meet this growing need.
They opened the only village shop in 1968 and the post office in 1974, running both for many years until, unfortunately, they were no longer viable due to the opening of larger stores.
Bill and Wendy had two daughters, Jackie and Linda, both of whom worked on the park from a young age. As teenagers, they helped out in the village shop and with the boat hire business—although at the time, it wasn’t always by choice!
After leaving school, both daughters married and started families. Jackie moved away and chose a different career path.
Linda married Tony in 1981 and they began married life living in a park home at Quiet Waters. They later spent three years living in St Ives while Linda worked in a bank, before returning in 1987 with their family and moving into ‘The Boat House’, which had been vacated by Bill and Wendy.
With a young family of her own, Linda became involved in every aspect of running the park, from office administration and grounds maintenance to cleaning the fleet of hire caravans.
In 1997, Tony joined the family business after many years as a self-employed carpet fitter. Together, he and Linda have managed the park following the retirement of Bill and Wendy.
Bill still lives on the park and has recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Sadly, Wendy passed away in 2022.
Linda and Tony have two children, Nicola and Mark, along with four grandchildren. Mark works part-time at the park, and Nicola is always happy to help whenever needed.
With such a long family history, we believe this continuity helps provide the personal touch that we are proud to offer all of our residents and visitors.
